What Is Dishwashing Liquid and How Does It Work?

Dishwashing liquid is a cleaning product that makes grease and food residue on plates, glasses and kitchen utensils washable with water. In this article we explain how dishwashing liquid works, its types and which one to use when.

How does dishwashing liquid remove grease?

Grease does not dissolve in water, which is why a greasy film remains on a plate washed with water alone. The main ingredients of dishwashing liquids, surfactants, are molecules with one end that likes water and the other that likes grease. These molecules surround grease droplets, break them into small particles and keep them suspended in the water, so the grease leaves with the rinse water.

Foam is a visual sign that the detergent is working, but it is not the only measure of cleaning power. What matters is that the right amount of product comes into contact with the dirt.

Types of dishwashing liquid

Liquid hand dishwashing detergent

The most common type. It is applied directly to the sponge or added to the wash water. Besides household bottles, it also comes in 5–30 kg canisters for businesses.

Tub gel dishwashing detergent

A thicker form supplied in a tub. It is picked up from the tub with a damp sponge and is preferred especially for spot use on greasy pots and pans.

Dishwasher detergent

Detergents used in machines are low-foam. If hand dishwashing liquid is used in a machine, excess foam can cause overflow. For industrial machines, industrial dishwasher products are a separate group.

Which dishwashing liquid should I choose?

  • Daily use at home: 750 ml–750 g household bottles are practical and economical.
  • Very greasy pots and pans: tub gel can be applied directly to the dirty area.
  • Restaurant and canteen sinks: 5, 20 or 30 kg canisters lower the unit cost and remove the need for frequent bottle changes.
  • Dishwasher: use only a low-foam detergent made for machines.

Tips for safe use

  • Don't exceed the amount stated on the pack; more detergent means longer rinsing, not better cleaning.
  • Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
  • Don't mix dishwashing liquid with bleach or other chemicals.
  • Store the product out of the reach of children, in its original packaging.
