Choosing Professional Cleaning Products for Businesses
A business's cleaning product needs vary with the type of areas, the number of users and the equipment used. The right choice directly affects both hygiene standards and the cleaning budget. This guide summarises the questions to answer before buying and the product groups by area.
1. Needs analysis: which areas are cleaned?
First list the areas to be cleaned: kitchen, washbasins and toilets, floors, windows, laundry, outdoor areas. For each area, identify the type of soiling (grease, limescale, dust, organic residue) and cleaning frequency. This list prevents buying unnecessary products and using the wrong product because one is missing.
2. Basic product list by area
Kitchen
Dishwashing liquid, machine detergent and rinse aid if there is an industrial machine, and degreaser for heavy grease.
Washbasins, toilets and showers
Liquid hand soap, bathroom and toilet cleaner and limescale remover, bleach, and shower gel and shampoo in accommodation facilities.
Floors and general surfaces
Surface cleaner, plus special products for wood or steel surfaces if present.
Glass and shop windows
Glass cleaner in spray bottles and refill canisters.
Laundry
Powder detergents or liquid detergents and fabric softeners.
3. Packaging and cost
Total cost is determined by the usage ratio, not the price per kilogram. For a product used diluted, calculate the cost per use based on the usage ratio on the pack. Large canisters lower the unit cost, but storage space and a system for decanting into bottles also need planning.
4. Dosing and staff
- Use a dosing pump, measuring cup or labelled spray bottles.
- Prepare a simple chart showing which product is used in which area.
- Inform staff about not mixing products and about personal protective equipment.
5. Choosing a supplier
The breadth of the product range, availability of the same product in different packs, continuity of delivery and access to technical documents (label, safety data sheet) are decisive in choosing a supplier.
