What Is pH Neutral Car Shampoo?
pH neutral car shampoo is a mild car wash product that is neither acidic nor markedly alkaline. It is preferred especially for cars with wax, ceramic coating or protective film, to preserve these protective layers.
What is pH?
pH is a 0–14 scale showing how acidic or basic (alkaline) a liquid is. 7 is considered neutral; below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline (basic). Pure water is about 7.
In cleaning products, pH is an important property that determines which dirt the product works against and on which surfaces it must be used with care.
Why choose a pH neutral shampoo?
- Preserves protective layers: Wax, sealants and ceramic coatings can wear faster with strongly acidic or alkaline products.
- Suitable for regular washing: On frequently washed cars, a mild shampoo puts less strain on paint and coating.
- Plastic and rubber parts: Neutral products are less likely to dry out these surfaces.
When are acidic and alkaline products used?
Strongly alkaline products work on heavy grease and organic dirt, while acidic products work on limescale and mineral stains. That's why professional car washes may use products of different pH in special stages such as pre-wash or rim cleaning.
Using these products on the wrong surface or at the wrong ratio can cause damage; always follow the product instructions.
How do I know if a shampoo is pH neutral?
Whether a product is pH neutral can only be known from the manufacturer's statement, label information or technical data sheet. Don't assume this property for a product without a pH neutral claim; if necessary, ask the manufacturer for technical information.
